Income from the tobacco sale has exceeded $110 million since the launch of the selling season

Current data from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) revealed that by last Friday (Day 27), income had achieved $111,2 million from the 30,1 million kg of tobacco sold.

The benefit is 16,38% above figure in 2012 and 15,70% above result in 2012.

The cost of tobacco as at March 21 2013 was about $3,69 per kg, 0,58 increased from $3,67 per kg during the same period in 2012.

On Friday, Boka Tobacco Auction Floors (BTAF) sold 4 110 million kg. Then it was Tobacco Sales Floors (TSF) with 4 103 million kg and Premier Tobacco Auction Floor (PTAF) with 3 299 million kg.

Masvingo South MP Walter Mzembi at the weekend said communal maize growers in his constituency were looking at moving to tobacco production in the forthcoming cropping season because of low rainfall.

He said growers would this week connect with TIMB as to switch to the cash crop.

TIMB chief executive officer Andrew Matibiri affirmed the development saying growers had shown a excited interest in growing tobacco.

“Usually growers in that region accustomed to grow oriental tobacco whose yields were low mostly because it is labour intensive unlike flue-cured tobacco,” he said.

Historical records demonstrate that Oriental tobacco is a sun-cured, remarkably aromatic, a small-leafed type that is cultivated in Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Lebanon and the Republic of Macedonia.

Oriental tobacco is often known as “Turkish tobacco”, as these areas were all historically part of the Ottoman Empire.

Official statistics show that at peak, almost 10 years ago, 50 tonnes of oriental tobacco was produced, which was then purchased by cigarette manufacturing firms.
